Oakleigh’s mix of older homes, extensions, townhouses and new builds means the same solar package will not suit every property.

Chief Electricians installs solar panels across Oakleigh, Oakleigh East and Oakleigh South. We inspect your roof, check your switchboard, review how you use electricity and ask about future plans before recommending a system.

You receive a home solar installation designed to produce useful solar electricity, reduce grid consumption and support later upgrades such as a home battery, electric vehicle or heat pump.

A Well Designed Solar System Responds to the Home Below It

Around central Oakleigh and Eaton Mall, established homes may have smaller roof areas, older switchboards or extensions added over several decades. These additions can create several roof pitches and limit the space available for one large panel group.

Homes near Scotchmans Creek Trail may also receive shade from established trees. Shade does not always prevent a good solar result, but it can change the panel layout or make microinverters and power optimisers worth considering.

In northern Oakleigh towards Chadstone Shopping Centre, townhouses and newer developments can have narrower roof sections or several orientations. Oakleigh East homes on the side closest to Monash University’s Clayton campus range from post-war houses to rebuilt and extended properties.

Oakleigh South has its own mix of post-war weatherboard and brick homes, newer family houses and townhouse developments.

These differences affect panel position, inverter choice, cable routes and the amount of energy your system can generate.

Your Solar Quote Starts With Your Electricity Use

A quarterly bill shows how much electricity you used, but it doesn’t tell the full story.

To size your solar installation for your Oakleigh home, we look at:

  • Your annual electricity consumption
  • How much power you use during daylight hours
  • Weekday and weekend usage
  • Heating, cooling, hot water and future electrification needs
  • Pool pumps or other large appliances
  • Plans for an electric vehicle
  • Whether you want to add a home battery
  • Likely changes to your household
  • Available roof area
  • Your network export limit

A household that uses plenty of daytime power may benefit from a different panel layout than one where everyone returns home in the evening. A family preparing to replace gas appliances may need more solar capacity than its current bills suggest.

We design for the way you expect to use electricity over the coming years, rather than treating your last power bill as the only guide.

Look Forward to These Benefits of Installing Solar on Your Home

Your home uses the solar electricity generated by your panels before purchasing power from the grid.

This can help you:

  • Reduce grid electricity consumption
  • Run daytime appliances on energy produced at home
  • Lower the operating cost of air conditioning
  • Heat water during solar production hours
  • Charge an electric vehicle from rooftop solar
  • Produce more of your own green energy
  • Monitor electricity generation and household use
  • Store surplus power if you add a battery

Your savings will depend on system size, energy use, electricity tariffs and how much solar power you consume at home. We provide an estimate based on your property during the proposal stage.

Our Recent Solar Installations in Oakleigh

9.5 kW Solar Installation for New Oakleigh Build

This new home on Connell Rd, Oakleigh, now has a 9.5kW solar system with 20 x Jinko Solar Tiger Neo 475W panels on the flat roof. We paired this with a 10kW inverter.

Solar & Battery Installation Oakleigh East

We installed 17 x Jinko Solar Tiger Neo Satin 440W solar panels on the tiled roof of this Oakleigh East home, totalling 7.48kW solar power. Paired with a Sungrow inverter and Sungrow 8kW battery, this homeowner can now store excess power generated during the day for use at night.

Solar Panels and Inverters Chosen for Your Property

Aiko & Jinko Solar Panels

We use high-output panels from established manufacturers with Australian warranty support. Their higher output per panel can be useful on homes where roof space is limited.

String & Hybrid Inverters

A string inverter can provide a cost-effective solution for an open roof with consistent orientation and limited shade.

A hybrid inverter may suit homeowners who plan to install a compatible battery now or later.

Microinverters

Microinverters allow each panel to operate independently. They can be useful on roofs with partial shade, several directions or small usable sections.

The more expensive option is not automatically the right one. We recommend the equipment that suits the roof, budget and future energy plans.

Adding a Home Battery

You do not need a battery to benefit from solar. Homes that consume plenty of electricity during daylight hours may achieve strong savings without storage.

A home battery becomes more useful when you:

  • Export surplus solar during the day
  • Purchase significant electricity after sunset
  • Want to reduce peak-period grid use
  • Need backup power during outages
  • Plan to run more of your home on electricity

If you want a battery later, we can include it in the original solar design. This may affect the inverter, switchboard work, equipment placement, and the amount of solar capacity installed.

Solar alone generally shuts down during a blackout. Backup power requires a suitable battery, inverter and gateway configured for that purpose. Let us know upfront if you would like backup power configured during an outage.

How to Get Started With Solar

New Installations

If this is your first solar system, we will explain your options and help you choose. To get the ball rolling, complete our contact form on this page, or give our team a call on 1300 22 33 23.

We start by looking at aerial footage of your home and modeling a proposed layout. This helps us map the size, slope and direction of each roof section. It also shows where shade may fall during the year.

We also review up to 12 months of power bills or smart-meter data. This tells us how much power you use and when you use it.

We then work out the panel count, roof layout and inverter size. If roof space is tight, we can compare higher-output panels with standard panels. You will see how much extra power they may produce and what they cost.

Once you are happy with the plan, we visit the property. We check the roof, switchboard, meter and cable path. Your proposal may include:

  • Recommended solar system size
  • Panel quantity and roof layout
  • Expected annual production
  • Solar panel and inverter options
  • Monitoring features
  • Available rebates and incentives
  • Product and workmanship warranties
  • Any required switchboard work
  • Estimated installation time
  • Options for adding battery storage

We also explain why we have selected a particular layout and inverter, including any effect caused by shade, roof direction or network limits.

Upgrading an Older Solar System

A solar system installed ten or more years ago may be too small for your current household.

Your power use may have increased due to air conditioning, working from home, electric hot water or an electric vehicle. Older panels and inverters may also provide less monitoring and fewer options for adding a battery.

Before recommending an upgrade, we check:

  • The age and condition of the panels
  • Current solar production
  • Existing inverter capacity
  • Panel and inverter compatibility
  • Available roof space
  • Mounting hardware and electrical condition
  • Current safety requirements
  • Switchboard capacity
  • United Energy connection rules

Sometimes we can add solar panels to the existing system. A separate second system may be more practical in other homes. Where the existing equipment is reaching the end of its useful life, replacing your solar system can provide a cleaner long-term result.

We will compare the options before asking you to make a decision.

Your United Energy Connection

Oakleigh, Oakleigh East and Oakleigh South properties generally connect through the United Energy distribution network.

United Energy currently lists maximum solar export capabilities of:

5 kW for a single-phase connection
15 kW across a three-phase connection

Your approved limit can be lower depending on the property connection and capacity available on the local network.

An export limit controls how much surplus electricity can enter the grid. It does not always limit how much solar capacity can be valuable at your home. A larger system may still make sense if you consume power during the day, plan to charge an EV or want to store surplus electricity in a battery.

We lodge the network application and confirm the approved export conditions before installation.
